Mumbai: Independent MLC Satyajeet Tambe, while reacting on the state budget in the Legislative Council, said that the excise department of Maharashtra has much potential and could generate considerable income but preventing leakage and crime in the department is the need of the hour.
“In 2011-12, excise in Maharashtra generated Rs 8,600 crore income while Uttar Pradesh generated Rs 8,139 crore. In 2023-24, Maharashtra number stands at Rs 25,200 crore and Uttar Pradesh has risen to Rs 58,000 crore. Just more than 10 years back, the numbers were similar, but UP more than doubled in comparison to Maharashtra,” he had.
Tambe also said that the excise department of Maharashtra has the potential to raise more than Rs 60,000 crore in income. “Technology should be used enough and needs to prevent leakage and crime in the department,” he added.
He also raised questions on how there is no concrete solar policy and no power purchase agreements in the state. He said there are much lesser solar plants and projects in comparison to other states. This will also help generate more income for Maharashtra in the longer run and also make the state environment-friendly.
