Ripple is delving into native XRP staking on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a potential game-changer that could infuse DeFi rewards into the decade-old network, fueling speculation of higher yields and broader adoption. Sparked by a November 18 blog from RippleX engineering head J. Ayo Akinyele, the exploration aims to evolve XRPL beyond cross-border payments, addressing its modest $75.77 million TVL amid Ethereum’s $100 billion DeFi dominance.
Akinyele’s post probes staking’s fit for XRPL’s federated Byzantine agreement (FBA) consensus, which skips Proof-of-Stake’s token-locking for trusted validators. “As XRP’s utility expands—liquidity, tokenization, real-time transfers—what if XRPL supported native staking?” he pondered, highlighting incentives for long-term holders and validators to enhance security without slashing fees, currently burned for anti-spam. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse amplified the discourse on X, praising the “thoughtful” dive and urging community input on XRPL’s DeFi trajectory.
CTO David Schwartz sketched two models: A dual-layer setup with a 16-validator “inner” ring stake-selected by the “outer” for ledger advancement via slashing/staking; or a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) layer funding smart-contract verification with fees, preserving consensus. “Clever technically, but practical hurdles loom,” Schwartz cautioned, noting XRPL’s aversion to stake-influenced power dynamics.
For XRP holders, staking could unlock passive income, collateral for lending on platforms like Aave, yield farming, and cross-chain bridges—rivaling Solana’s 7% APY. Analysts forecast a TVL surge, positioning XRPL against DeFi giants while leveraging Hooks and EVM sidechains for programmability. “This bridges XRP’s payment roots to yield-bearing assets, attracting institutions eyeing ETFs,” said CryptoSlate’s Alex Hiesboeck.
X erupted with optimism: “XRP staking = DeFi liquidity explosion,” tweeted @CryptoastMedia, while @NameCoinNews_ eyed ETF synergies. Yet, skeptics flag regulatory snags post-SEC truce and technical overhauls. No rollout timeline exists—testing may span months—but with XRP at $0.58 (down 13% monthly), this DeFi pivot could ignite a rally toward $1 by 2026, per CoinDCX. As RippleX solicits feedback, XRPL’s staking saga underscores blockchain’s maturation: From swift settlements to staking sovereignty.
