From Bihar to the World: The TirhutWala.com Story

Abhinav Jha, founder of TirhutWala.com, shares how his journey from a village in Bihar led to building a globally-reaching rural startup. In this exclusive conversation, he discusses the inspiration behind the brand, the challenges of building from the grassroots, and how TirhutWala is transforming the makhana industry.

Q1: What inspired you to start TirhutWala.com? Can you tell us about the idea’s origin?
Abhinav Jha: The inspiration behind TirhutWala.com came from my deep desire to create something meaningful from my roots. Coming from Kubauli Ram village near Pusa in Samastipur, Bihar, I witnessed local farmers and producers struggle to reach the market despite having great quality products. Bihar produces some of the best makhana in the world, but there was no branding or premium market access. TirhutWala was born to change that—to put local pride on global shelves.

Q2: How did your personal or regional background influence this journey?
Abhinav Jha: My upbringing in rural Bihar exposed me to both challenges and possibilities. I saw the lack of infrastructure and market linkages but also recognized the potential. TirhutWala is my attempt to organize that potential into a scalable business.

Q3: What problem is TirhutWala.com solving, and for whom?
Abhinav Jha: We’re solving two key problems—connecting farmers with better markets and offering health-conscious consumers authentic, chemical-free, nutritious products.

Q4: What’s the meaning behind the name TirhutWala?
Abhinav Jha: ‘Tirhut’ refers to the culturally rich region of North Bihar, and ‘Wala’ means someone who belongs. It represents pride, identity, and purpose.

Q5: What are your main offerings?
Abhinav Jha: We offer premium makhana and value-added products such as: – Roasted Makhana in 12+ flavors – Plant-based Protein Powder (Advita) – Makhana Chocolates – Smoothie Powder – Kheer Mix We also offer private and white-label support to other brands.

Q6: How is your business model different in the digital marketplace?
Abhinav Jha: We follow a village-first, tech-enabled D2C model, controlling everything from sourcing to delivery. We cut out middlemen and extend our impact through private label services.

Q7: How do you use technology to reach Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities?
Abhinav Jha: We leverage social media, SEO, regional content, WhatsApp tools, and our D2C websites—TirhutWala.com and Biharo.com—to reach diverse customers.

Q8: How are you promoting local culture through TirhutWala?
Abhinav Jha: We hire local youth, train them in digital skills, use Maithili artwork on packaging, and source all our raw materials locally.

Q9: What role do local partners play in your operations?
Abhinav Jha: They’re the backbone—from sourcing to co-packing to logistics. We also mentor rural entrepreneurs entering the food processing space.

Q10: How is TirhutWala contributing to regional entrepreneurship in Bihar?
Abhinav Jha: We’re proving that world-class businesses can emerge from villages. By creating jobs and setting an example, we hope to inspire others.

Q11: What were the biggest challenges in starting up?
Abhinav Jha: Infrastructure gaps, courier delays, and limited resources. Even sending a parcel meant traveling 20+ km. But every challenge fueled our determination.

Q12: How did you overcome issues like funding and logistics?
Abhinav Jha: We bootstrapped, reinvested earnings, built strong courier partnerships, and used storytelling to build trust.

Q13: What key lessons have you learned?
Abhinav Jha: Start where you are. Consistency and purpose matter more than speed. Build with the community.

Q14: What has growth looked like so far?
Abhinav Jha: Since launching on Oct 1, 2024, we’ve exported to 9 countries, served thousands of customers, and helped 50+ brands launch. Retention and month-over-month growth are strong.

Q15: What are your goals moving forward?
Abhinav Jha: Short term: improve logistics and add regional superfoods. Long term: become a global rural FMCG brand present in 50+ countries.

Q16: Do you plan to expand beyond the Tirhut region?
Abhinav Jha: Yes, but we’ll preserve our regional identity. The essence of Tirhut will always remain central.

Q17: What’s your advice to rural entrepreneurs?
Abhinav Jha: Your location is your strength. Solve local problems—they often have global relevance.

Q18: How do you see the startup ecosystem in Bihar?
Abhinav Jha: It’s emerging, but promising. With more visibility and support, Bihar can lead the next wave of startups.

Q19: How can the government and investors better support rural entrepreneurs?
Abhinav Jha: Simplify access to schemes, improve infrastructure, and offer tailored loan products. Mentorship, awareness, and seed funds will make a big difference.

Q20: What does success mean to you?
Abhinav Jha: Success is building something meaningful that uplifts others and proves that even a small village can shape the global market.
