The assailants deployed a flash loan to borrow 4.6 million BONE governance tokens, securing a two-thirds majority over Shibarium’s 12 validators by compromising 10 signing keys. This allowed them to authorize a rogue transaction, draining 224.57 ETH (worth about $580,000) and 92.6 billion SHIB tokens (valued at $1.8 million) from the bridge contract. Funds funneled to attacker wallets, but swift action froze the borrowed BONE and paused staking/unstaking, averting deeper damage. Notably, $700,000 in KNINE tokens was also seized by authorities.
Shiba Inu lead developer Kaal Dhairya labeled it a “sophisticated” assault, possibly months in the making, stemming from compromised keys rather than protocol flaws. The team, partnering with Hexens, Seal911, and PeckShield, is probing forensics, rotating keys, and shifting assets to a secure 6-of-9 multisig wallet. Their statement underscored resolve: “Our top priority is safeguarding user funds. We are working with leading blockchain security partners to trace the stolen assets and enhance system resilience.”
Cross-chain bridges remain hacker magnets; 2022-2023 saw billions lost to similar exploits, and 2025’s first half tallied $2.2 billion in crypto thefts per CertiK. Yet, irony struck as BONE rocketed 42% to $0.235, with volumes topping $10.8 million, while SHIB dipped modestly.
