Ant Group Files Hong Kong Trademarks Linked to Crypto and Stablecoins

Chinese fintech powerhouse Ant Group, the Alibaba-backed force behind Alipay’s 1.3 billion users, has quietly filed trademarks in Hong Kong for “AntCoin” and related blockchain services, hinting at a regulated re-entry into digital assets. The June 2025 applications, surfaced via IPD records, cover stablecoin issuance, virtual asset custody, crypto wallets, and tokenized payments—positioning Ant as a bridge between Asia’s payment giant and Web3 innovation.

This comes amid Beijing’s mid-October halt on mainland stablecoin plans, redirecting focus to Hong Kong’s compliant ecosystem. Ant International, the overseas arm, announced in June intentions to seek fiat-referenced stablecoin licenses under the city’s August ordinance, which mandates HK$25M capital, local reserves, and HKMA oversight—joining applicants like JD.com. The filings precede Chairman Eric Jing’s keynotes at Hong Kong FinTech Week, where crypto agendas dominate alongside officials like Secretary Christopher Hui.

Ant’s blockchain legacy—via AntChain for traceability and cross-border trade—fuels speculation of enterprise-grade tools. Potential rollouts could enable seamless Hong Kong-mainland settlements, DeFi integrations, and loyalty tokens, tapping $19.4B YTD stablecoin volumes. “Hong Kong offers regulatory clarity for fintechs like Ant to test Web3 waters,” noted analyst David Pakman of CoinFund.

As Hong Kong caps licenses at under 10 to favor compliant players, Ant’s move—echoed on X by influencers like @CryptosR_Us—signals mainland giants’ pivot to the SAR as Asia’s crypto gateway. Amid a $308B global stablecoin market (99% USD-pegged), AntCoin could diversify with HKD or CNY ties, accelerating tokenized finance by 2026.
